Individual Counselor, Marriage Counselor, Family Counselor, and Addictions Counselor

About Me

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and I have been in practice providing individual, group, marital, and family therapy since 2009. I have worked in both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings, and I have worked in school and home-based treatment as well as treatment in office. I have been working in private practice as Just A Step Counseling since 2011, which I moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma City in 2017. The goal and name of my practice is reflected in the C.S. Lewis quote at the top of this page, and it is my hope to help people to find their next right step. I have a passion for helping people to understand the underlying causes for their struggles and identifying skills and resources for them to find health and healing in various aspects of their lives one step at a time.

Philosophy

I believe that people do the best that they can with what they have in life. This means that when people are struggling and experiencing hard times, it is because they need help and resources from someone else in order to be able to achieve increased health and happiness. People are formed by the people and experiences that occur around them while growing up in life. Understanding how these things impact a person can give the person awareness in order to be able to decide what type of person he or she wants to be. While these people and experiences help to form a person, they do not have to define who he or she will be in the future.

I come from a Christian perspective in both my personal and professional life, so I provide treatment from a Christ-centered perspective. This means that it informs how I view and understand people and how I interact with them. However, it does not mean that I work exclusively with people from a Christian background or that I preach to people in therapy sessions. I have had great success and positive interactions with clients from all types of spiritual and religious backgrounds, and my own Christian perspective can be as explicit or not as clients are comfortable with in sessions.

Education and Training

I received my bachelor's degree in preaching from Harding University in Searcy, AR. I then received my master's degree in marriage and family therapy from Harding University two years later. Since that time, I have been certified as a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT), a Certified Multiple Addictions Therapist (CMAT) specialized in chemical dependency, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) II.
